More about the significance of Mount Kailash.

Mount Kailash, located in the far reaches of western Tibet, is renowned for its spiritual significance and breathtaking natural beauty. This majestic peak is an epicenter for four major religions – Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, and Bon – making it a hotspot for spiritual pilgrimages.

In Hindu mythology, Mount Kailash is considered the mythical Mount Meru, a cosmic axis that connects the realms of heaven and earth⁴. It is also regarded as the origin of four sacred rivers: the Indus, the Sutlej, the Brahmaputra, and the Karnali. These beliefs contribute to the deep reverence and spiritual significance attributed to Mount Kailash.

Mount Kailash is hailed as the abode of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, surrounded by celestial beings – Devtas, Ganas, Yakshas, Yogis, Siddha Purushas, and Gandharvas. The Skanda Purana, a revered Hindu text, designates Kailash Parvat as the Supreme Mountain where Lord Shiva resides.

The lake Mansarovar, located near Mount Kailash, is considered as one of the Holy places as the legends say that the lake is a bathing place for gods during Brahma Muhurta. According to Hindu beliefs, the lake was first created in the mind of Lord Brahma and so is named Mansarovar¹. Mansarovar, as the name suggests, is a combination of two Sanskrit words: manas means ‘mind’ and ‘intellect’ and sarovar means ‘lake’. It is believed that at Kailash Mansarovar the lords reside and meditate.

The journey around this sacred peak, known as Kailash Parikrama, covers a distance of 53 kilometers, challenging the physical and spiritual resilience of those who embark on this sacred circumambulation.

Surrounded by myth and mystique, Mount Kailash is believed to be the dwelling place of gods, the center of the universe, and a gateway to enlightenment⁵. Its sheer magnificence and spiritual significance transcend cultural and religious boundaries, captivating the imagination and stirring the souls of all who behold its grandeur.
